Their Story
Cameron Harrison Thomas was a sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, an elite special operations unit based at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was from Kettering, Ohio, and was 23 years old.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Thomas died on April 27, 2017, in Nangarhar Province, eastern Afghanistan. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. The Pentagon stated he was killed during a combat operation, but did not release further tactical details. No other U.S. casualties were reported from the same incident.
Thomas's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. The operation, which began on January 1, 2015, focused on counterterrorism and advising Afghan forces. In 2017, Nangarhar Province was a significant area of operations against the Islamic State's affiliate in Afghanistan, known as ISIS-Khorasan.
The Army posthumously promoted Thomas to the rank of sergeant. He was survived by his parents and siblings. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Sergeant Thomas is memorialized on the Ranger Memorial at Fort Benning and on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Department of Defense. His name is inscribed on Panel 64E, Line 20 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
