Their Story
Staff Sergeant Peter Wagner Taub was a 30-year-old Air Force investigator from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was assigned to Detachment 816, 8th Field Investigations Squadron, part of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), based out of Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. AFOSI personnel serve as criminal investigators and counterintelligence agents.
On December 21, 2015, Taub was killed in Bajawri Village, located in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces. He was part of a U.S. contingent advising and assisting Afghan troops in the area.
Taub's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that began in January 2015 following the conclusion of the larger International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat mission. The operation focused on counterterrorism and training Afghan forces, with U.S. personnel often embedded in advisory roles in contested regions like Helmand.
The Department of Defense announced his death on December 22, 2015. He was posthumously promoted from Senior Airman to the rank of Staff Sergeant. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
