U.S. Army Sergeant Allen Levi Stigler Jr., 22, of Arlington, Texas, died on August 13, 2017, from hostile action at Qayyarah Airfield West, Iraq.

Their Story

Allen Levi Stigler Jr. was a 22-year-old sergeant from Arlington, Texas. He served in Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Stigler died on August 13, 2017, at Qayyarah Airfield West, a major coalition staging base south of Mosul. The official casualty report listed the cause as hostile fire. No further details about the specific incident were publicly released by the military.

Stigler's death occurred during a pivotal phase of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS). In mid-2017, Iraqi Security Forces, backed by coalition airpower and artillery support, were engaged in clearing operations in Nineveh province following the recapture of Mosul in July. Qayyarah Airfield West, known as Q-West, was a key logistics hub for these operations.

The Pentagon announced Stigler's death three days after the incident. He was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Sergeant Stigler was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart posthumously. He is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Bragg and by his family and unit.
