Staff Sgt. Christopher-kenley Aldric Slutman, 43, of Newark, Delaware, was a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve member killed in a hostile incident in Bagram, Afghanistan, on April 8, 2019.
Their Story
Staff Sgt. Christopher-kenley Aldric Slutman was a 43-year-old Marine Corps reservist from Newark, Delaware. He was assigned to the 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. According to the Marine Corps, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
Slutman died on April 8, 2019, in Bagram, Parwan Province, Afghanistan. A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated near his convoy. The attack, claimed by the Taliban, killed three other U.S. service members and wounded three more.
His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S.-led NATO mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in January 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan security forces and conduct counterterrorism operations.
The Marine Corps confirmed his death the following day. Slutman was posthumously promoted from sergeant to staff sergeant. He was also a 15-year veteran of the District of Columbia Fire Department, where he served as a firefighter.
Slutman was survived by his wife and three children. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. A street in his hometown of Newark, Delaware, was renamed in his honor.
