Sgt. Christina Marie Schoenecker, 26, of Arlington, Kansas, was a U.S. Army Reserve soldier killed in action on February 19, 2018, in Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation Inherent Resolve.

Their Story

Christina Marie Schoenecker was a 26-year-old sergeant from Arlington, Kansas. She served in the U.S. Army Reserve with the 387th Human Resources Company, 329th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 89th Sustainment Brigade, based in Wichita, Kansas.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Schoenecker died on February 19, 2018, in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained during an indirect fire attack. The attack, involving enemy mortar or rocket fire, reportedly struck the area of Baghdad International Airport, where U.S. and coalition forces were located.

Her death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. The operation began in August 2014 following ISIS's rapid territorial gains. By 2018, the mission involved sustained combat and support operations across Iraq.

The Pentagon announced her death the following day. Her body was returned to the United States, and a funeral service was held in her hometown. The Kansas Army National Guard and local veterans' groups reportedly participated in memorial events.

Schoenecker was posthumously promoted to sergeant. She is memorialized on veterans' monuments in Kansas and by the U.S. Army Reserve. Her unit continued its support mission following her death.
