Sanmarco, Michael Robert

Michael Robert Sanmarco was a 44-year-old Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He served with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 81st Armored Regiment, part of the 199th Infantry Brigade based at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was from West Hills, California.

Sanmarco died on March 14, 2020, in Doha, Qatar. The Department of Defense announced his death as a non-combat related incident under investigation. He was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State group.

Operation Inherent Resolve began in August 2014, following the territorial expansion of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The campaign involved a coalition of nations conducting airstrikes, training missions, and advisory support. By March 2019, the Islamic State had lost its last territorial foothold in Syria, but the operation continued to counter insurgent activity.

The Army did not release specific details of the incident leading to Sanmarco's death, citing the ongoing investigation. His death was reported by several U.S. military news outlets in the days following the Pentagon's announcement.
