Corporal Humberto Abiel Sanchez, a 22-year-old U.S. Marine from Logansport, Indiana, was killed in a hostile incident in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021.

Their Story

Corporal Humberto Abiel Sanchez was a 22-year-old Marine from Logansport, Indiana. He served with the Ground Combat Element, Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, based at Camp Pendleton, California. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2021.

On August 26, 2021, Sanchez was killed in a suicide bombing at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. The attack, claimed by the Islamic State ? Khorasan Province, detonated amid the evacuation of civilians following the Taliban takeover of the city. The blast killed 13 U.S. service members and at least 170 Afghan civilians.

Sanchez died during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom. The operation, which began on January 1, 2015, focused on training Afghan forces and conducting counterterrorism strikes. His death occurred during the final, non-combatant evacuation phase of the U.S. withdrawal from the country.

His death was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Defense. In Logansport, local officials and community members held a vigil and lined streets with flags to honor him. His body was returned to Indiana in early September 2021.

Sanchez was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal. He is remembered by his unit and hometown as a dedicated Marine. His name is inscribed on the Logansport Veterans Memorial.
