Their Story
Andrew Patrick Ross was a U.S. Army officer assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was a 2011 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, where he was a member of the Army ROTC program and commissioned as a second lieutenant. He later completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and was serving as a Special Forces officer at the time of his deployment.
On November 27, 2018, Captain Ross was killed by small arms fire during a combat operation in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. The operation was reportedly part of a partnered mission with Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. The U.S. Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained in the engagement.
Ross was killed during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that began in January 2015. The mission followed the conclusion of the larger Operation Enduring Freedom and focused on counterterrorism and training, advising, and assisting Afghan forces. In 2018, Ghazni Province was a contested area where Taliban forces frequently clashed with Afghan and coalition troops.
Following his death, the U.S. Army posthumously awarded Captain Ross the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His body was returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held at Fort Bragg. He was buried with full military honors in his hometown of Lexington, Virginia.
Captain Ross is remembered by the 3rd Special Forces Group as a dedicated soldier and leader.
