Rémi Ochlik was a French photojournalist. He was killed in a shelling attack in Homs, Syria, on February 22, 2012.

Their Story

Rémi Ochlik was a French photojournalist born in 1983. He founded his own photo agency, IP3 Press, and gained international recognition in 2011 after winning a World Press Photo award for his coverage of the Tunisian revolution.

On February 22, 2012, Ochlik and veteran American war correspondent Marie Colvin were killed in a shelling attack on a makeshift media center in the Baba Amr district of Homs. The building, which was being used by activists and journalists, was reportedly struck by Syrian government forces. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) confirmed his death as work-related.

Ochlik died during the Syrian civil war, a multi-sided conflict that began in 2011 with protests against President Bashar al-Assad's government. The fighting in Homs, a center of early opposition, was particularly intense in early 2012, with government forces besieging rebel-held neighborhoods.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned Ochlik's death, stating it showed the 'horror' of the Syrian regime's crackdown. His body was repatriated to France, and a memorial service was held in Paris. The attack that killed him and Colvin drew widespread condemnation from media and human rights groups.

Ochlik is remembered for his frontline photography from conflicts in Libya, Egypt, and Syria. His work, characterized by its proximity to subjects, continues to be exhibited. The Rémi Ochlik Award was later established by the city of Perpignan to support young photojournalists.
