Major Phyllis Joy Pelky, 45, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, was a United States Air Force officer assigned to the Air Force Academy. She was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan, on October 11, 2015.
Their Story
Major Phyllis Joy Pelky was a 45-year-old officer in the United States Air Force. She was assigned to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and was a resident of Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Pelky died on October 11, 2015, in Kabul, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, she was killed in a non-combat related vehicle incident at Camp Integrity, a NATO special operations compound in the Afghan capital. The incident was under investigation.
Her death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that began in January 2015 following the conclusion of the larger International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat mission. The operation focused on counter-terrorism and training Afghan forces.
The Air Force confirmed her death in a press release. She was one of at least two U.S. service members to die in Afghanistan on that date. Her body was returned to the United States.
Major Pelky's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Air Force Academy. She is remembered by her colleagues and community as a dedicated officer.
