U.S. Army Specialist Michael Travis Osorio, 20, of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, was killed in action on April 23, 2019, in Taji, Iraq.
Their Story
Michael Travis Osorio was a 20-year-old soldier from Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
On April 23, 2019, Osorio was killed in a non-combat incident at Camp Taji, a major military base north of Baghdad. The Department of Defense stated the incident was under investigation. No further details regarding the circumstances were publicly released.
Osorio's death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition mission against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. By early 2019, the physical caliphate had been declared defeated, and the coalition's role had largely shifted to training, advising, and assisting Iraqi security forces. The mission, however, continued with a persistent threat from insurgent attacks.
Following his death, Osorio's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal. His funeral was held in his home state of Idaho.
He is remembered by his unit and community. The 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team honored his service, and his name is inscribed on memorials at Fort Carson and in Idaho.
