Pfc. Brian Patrick Odiorne, 21, of Ware, Massachusetts, was a soldier with the 82nd Field Artillery Regiment. He was killed in action on February 20, 2017, in Habbaniyah, Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

Their Story

Brian Patrick Odiorne was a 21-year-old from Ware, Massachusetts. He served as a Private First Class in Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Odiorne died on February 20, 2017, in Habbaniyah, Iraq, from wounds sustained during an enemy engagement. The incident occurred while his unit was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. No further operational details of the engagement were publicly released.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIL) in Iraq and Syria. It was formally launched in August 2014. In early 2017, Iraqi Security Forces, supported by U.S. and coalition advisors, were conducting clearing operations in Anbar Province, including the area around Habbaniyah and the nearby city of Fallujah.

Odiorne's death was reported by the Defense Casualty Analysis System and noted by several news outlets. The Army posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. His remains were returned to Massachusetts, where he was buried with military honors.

He is remembered by his family and community in Ware. In 2018, a local bridge was dedicated in his memory by the Massachusetts legislature.
