Maj. Moises Abraham Navas, 34, of Germantown, Maryland, was a U.S. Marine killed in a hostile incident in Qarah Chawq, Iraq, on March 8, 2020.

Their Story

Maj. Moises Abraham Navas was a 34-year-old officer from Germantown, Maryland, serving with the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, Marine Raider Regiment, Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was a veteran of multiple deployments.

According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, Navas died on March 8, 2020, from wounds sustained during a combat engagement in Qarah Chawq, Iraq. The Marine Corps stated the cause was hostile action. The incident reportedly occurred during a partnered mission with Iraqi forces.

Navas was deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition mission against the Islamic State (ISIS). By March 2020, following the territorial defeat of ISIS's so-called caliphate in 2019, the mission had largely shifted to an advise-and-assist role, supporting Iraqi forces in counter-insurgency operations against remaining ISIS cells.

The Marine Corps announced his death on March 9, 2020. His commander, Col. John Lynch, stated Navas was 'a dedicated and professional Marine Raider' who 'epitomized the quiet professional.' His death was reported by several U.S. news outlets, including Military Times and The Washington Post.

Navas was posthumously promoted to the rank of major. He is survived by his wife and children. His name is listed on the Marine Corps Special Operations Command Memorial at Camp Lejeune.
