Their Story

Etienne Jules Murphy was a 22-year-old soldier from Loganville, Georgia. He served as a Specialist with Company B, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.

Murphy died on May 26, 2017, in Al-Hasakah province, Syria. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by small arms fire during a mission to clear an ISIS-held building. The operation was part of a larger effort to advise and assist local partner forces.

Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition campaign against ISIS, began in August 2014. By mid-2017, the coalition was engaged in intense urban combat to recapture key cities like Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria, while also conducting targeted raids in other provinces like Al-Hasakah.

The Pentagon announced Murphy's death three days later, on May 29, 2017. He was the second U.S. service member to be killed in direct combat in Syria since the start of the operation. His body was returned to the United States for burial.

Murphy was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He is memorialized on the Defense Casualty Analysis System roster and by his unit.
