U.S. Army Sergeant Bryan Cooper Mount, 25, of Saint George, Utah, was killed in action on July 21, 2020, while serving in Syria during Operation Inherent Resolve.
Their Story
Bryan Cooper Mount was a 25-year-old sergeant from Saint George, Utah, assigned to Troop B, 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was deployed to Iraq and Syria as part of the U.S. military's long-term advisory and assistance mission.
On July 21, 2020, Mount was killed while on patrol along Main Supply Route Naples in northeastern Syria. The U.S. Department of Defense stated he died from wounds sustained in a vehicle rollover incident. No enemy contact was reported in connection with the event.
Mount's death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led multinational campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group. The operation began in August 2014 following ISIS's rapid territorial gains in Iraq and Syria. By 2020, the mission had shifted from major combat operations to a focus on training local forces and conducting counter-terrorism patrols.
Following his death, the 82nd Airborne Division, the higher command for Mount's unit, issued a statement mourning the loss. His body was returned to the United States, and memorials were held at Fort Bragg and in his home state of Utah.
Sergeant Mount was one of 107 U.S. service members who died during Operation Inherent Resolve. He was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. His name is recorded on memorials honoring those killed in the conflict against ISIS.
