U.S. Army Staff Sergeant James Francis Moriarty, 27, of Kerrville, Texas, died in Amman, Jordan on November 4, 2016. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Their Story

James Francis Moriarty was a 27-year-old U.S. Army Special Forces soldier from Kerrville, Texas. He served as a Staff Sergeant with Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On November 4, 2016, Moriarty was killed outside the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Center (KASOTC) in Amman, Jordan. According to U.S. and Jordanian officials, a Jordanian police officer opened fire on a U.S. military vehicle at the facility's gate, killing Moriarty and two other U.S. service members before being shot dead by Jordanian forces.

Moriarty's death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. The operation began in August 2014. Jordan, a key U.S. ally, hosted coalition personnel for training and support missions.

The incident prompted an immediate investigation by Jordanian authorities. The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the deaths, and the soldiers' remains were repatriated to the United States. The Jordanian government stated the shooting was an isolated act by an individual officer.

Staff Sergeant Moriarty was posthumously promoted to Sergeant First Class. He is memorialized on the Global War on Terrorism Memorial at Fort Campbell and in his hometown of Kerrville.
