U.S. Army Sergeant Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia, was killed in a drone attack on Tower 22, a U.S. military outpost in Jordan, on January 28, 2024.

Their Story

Sergeant Breonna Alexsondria Moffett was a 23-year-old soldier from Savannah, Georgia. She served as a horizontal construction engineer with the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, based at Fort Moore, Georgia. Her unit was deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

On January 28, 2024, a one-way attack drone struck the living quarters at Tower 22, a remote U.S. logistics support base in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border. The attack killed three U.S. Army Reserve soldiers, including Sergeant Moffett, and wounded over 40 other service members. The U.S. Department of Defense assessed the attack as hostile.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led military coalition mission against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. It began in August 2014. While the territorial caliphate was declared defeated in 2019, the mission continued with an advise-and-assist and counter-terrorism focus. U.S. forces in Jordan, Iraq, and Syria have faced periodic rocket and drone attacks from Iran-aligned militia groups.

The attack on Tower 22 was the first to result in U.S. service member fatalities in Jordan since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, which had increased regional tensions. U.S. President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin publicly condemned the strike, vowing to hold those responsible to account. The U.S. military attributed the attack to the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed militias.

Sergeant Moffett was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Sergeant. She was remembered by her family and unit as a dedicated soldier who enjoyed cooking and was deeply loved. Her remains were returned to the United States in a dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base.
