Their Story

Cameron Alexander Meddock was a sergeant assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He was a native of Amarillo, Texas, and was 26 years old at the time of his death.

Meddock was wounded during a combat operation in Afghanistan's Badghis Province on January 13, 2019. According to U.S. military statements, he was medically evacuated from the battlefield and transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for treatment. He died from his wounds at the hospital on January 17.

His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in 2015. The mission involved counterterrorism operations and support for Afghan security forces. By 2019, U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan had fallen below 5,000, but combat operations by elite units like the 75th Ranger Regiment continued.

The U.S. Department of Defense officially announced Meddock's death on January 18, 2019. His name was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System. His battalion commander stated that Meddock was a 'talented Ranger' and a 'beloved teammate.'

Meddock was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. He is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier. His name is listed on memorials honoring service members killed in the post-9/11 wars.
