Their Story
Kevin Joseph Mcenroe was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving with the elite 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. A native of Tucson, Arizona, he was 30 years old when deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
On November 4, 2016, Mcenroe died in Jafr, Jordan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a non-combat incident, which was under investigation. Initial reports from officials indicated the incident was a shooting at a Jordanian military base, and a U.S. service member was also wounded.
Mcenroe's death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. In late 2016, coalition forces were engaged in major offensives to recapture key cities like Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria from ISIS control.
The Pentagon confirmed Mcenroe's death the following day. His unit, the 5th Special Forces Group, was actively involved in training and advising partner forces in the region. No further details about the investigation's findings were publicly released.
Mcenroe is memorialized on the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) memorial wall at Fort Campbell. His name is also inscribed on the Special Operations Memorial at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
