U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Matthew Quinn McClintock, 30, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was killed on January 5, 2016, in the Marjah District of Afghanistan.

Their Story

Sergeant First Class Matthew Quinn McClintock was a Special Forces soldier assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), a Washington Army National Guard unit based in Buckley, Washington. He was a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was 30 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan.

On January 5, 2016, McClintock was killed by small-arms fire during a mission in the Marjah District of Helmand Province. The operation was reportedly part of a larger effort to clear the area of Taliban insurgents. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.

McClintock's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in January 2015. The mission's stated objectives included training Afghan forces and conducting counter-terrorism operations. In early 2016, U.S. and Afghan forces were engaged in intense fighting in Helmand Province to prevent Taliban gains.

Following his death, McClintock was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. He was survived by his wife and an infant son. A memorial service was held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

McClintock was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. In 2017, a veterans' park in his hometown of Albuquerque was dedicated in his honor.
