U.S. Army Sergeant Jason Mitchell McClary, 24, of Export, Pennsylvania, died on December 2, 2018, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jason Mitchell McClary was a 24-year-old sergeant from Export, Pennsylvania. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
McClary died from wounds sustained during a combat engagement in Afghanistan on November 27, 2018. According to the Department of Defense, he was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a patrol in Andar District, Ghazni Province. He was medically evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he died five days later.
His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2015. The operation focused on counterterrorism and advising Afghan security forces. In 2018, the Andar District was an area of persistent insurgent activity.
The Pentagon announced McClary's death on December 4, 2018. His body was returned to Pennsylvania, where he was buried with full military honors at Twin Valley Memorial Park in Delmont. Local news reported that his hometown held a procession and memorial service.
McClary was posthumously promoted to sergeant and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal. He is remembered by his unit and community, and his name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.
