Their Story
Seaman Carlos Mazon was a 19-year-old sailor from Chicago, Illinois. He was assigned to the Naval Security Force in Bahrain, a unit responsible for force protection at U.S. naval installations in the region.
On April 23, 2017, Mazon was killed in Manama, Bahrain. According to the U.S. Navy, he was shot while standing post at a pier facility. The Bahraini Ministry of Interior stated a security guard, a Bahraini national, was arrested in connection with the shooting. The incident was investigated as a possible act of terrorism.
Mazon was deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters, a key logistical and command hub for naval operations across the Middle East, including the campaign against ISIS.
The U.S. Navy confirmed Mazon's death the following day. His remains were returned to the United States. The Bahraini government condemned the attack and stated its commitment to the security partnership with the United States.
Mazon was posthumously advanced to the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. He is memorialized on the Navy Memorial's 'Remembering Our Fallen' page. No public statements from his family are widely documented in major news archives.
