U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Will Duston Lindsay, 33, of Cortez, Colorado, died on March 22, 2019, from hostile fire in Talawka Village, Afghanistan, while serving with the 10th Special Forces Group.
Their Story
Sergeant First Class Will Duston Lindsay was a Special Forces soldier assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado. A native of Cortez, Colorado, he was 33 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
On March 22, 2019, Lindsay was killed by small arms fire during a combat operation in Talawka Village, Zabul Province, Afghanistan. The operation reportedly targeted Taliban fighters in the area. He was one of two U.S. service members killed in separate engagements in Afghanistan on that date.
Operation Freedom's Sentinel was the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2015. By 2019, U.S. troop levels had been reduced to under 5,000, but combat operations against Taliban and Islamic State militants continued, resulting in periodic casualties.
Lindsay's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, among others.
Lindsay was remembered by his unit as a dedicated soldier. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson and is included on the Special Operations Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters.
