Their Story
Master Sergeant Gregory Thomas Kuhse was a 38-year-old U.S. Air Force airman from Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was assigned to the 3rd Manpower Requirements Squadron, based at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, a unit responsible for personnel and manpower analysis. According to the Department of Defense, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
On October 11, 2015, Kuhse was killed in Kabul, the Afghan capital. The Pentagon stated he died from wounds sustained during an engagement with enemy forces. The incident reportedly occurred at Camp Integrity, a NATO special operations facility in Kabul, which was attacked by a suicide bomber and small arms fire that day.
Kuhse's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S.-led NATO mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on January 1, 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan security forces and conduct counterterrorism operations against remnants of al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
