Their Story
Hansen Bradee Kirkpatrick was a 19-year-old Private First Class from Wasilla, Alaska. He served as an active-duty soldier with Company A, 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, based out of Fort Bliss, Texas.
On July 3, 2017, Kirkpatrick died from wounds sustained during a combat operation in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. According to a U.S. Department of Defense release, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire.
His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in Afghanistan. The mission, which began on January 1, 2015, focused on counterterrorism and training Afghan forces.
Kirkpatrick's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Anchorage Daily News, which noted his Alaska roots. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
