Their Story

Branden Tyme Kimball was a 21-year-old sergeant from Central Point, Oregon. He served with Company D, 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit specialized in aviation support operations.

On February 12, 2020, Sergeant Kimball died from wounds sustained in a combat incident at Bagram Airfield, a major U.S. military base in Parwan Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he was killed in action, though specific details of the engagement were not publicly released.

Kimball's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in Afghanistan. The operation, which began in January 2015, focused on counter-terrorism and training Afghan forces. The war, which started in 2001, was the longest in American history.

Following his death, the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade and Fort Drum command issued statements honoring his service. His name was added to the Defense Casualty Analysis System. Local media in Oregon reported on his death and the community's response.

Sergeant Kimball was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal. He is memorialized on the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial. His unit continued its deployment following the incident.
