Their Story
Ali-Akbar Karyani Pak was an 8-year-old boy attending the Shajareh Tayyebeh (The Good Tree) primary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, southern Iran. He was killed on 28 February 2026 when US missiles struck the school during the opening hours of the US-Israeli military offensive against Iran.
His name, and that of his younger brother Mohammad-Ali Karyani Pak (7 years old), both appear on the verified list of 61 victims published by Middle East Eye on 4 March 2026. Their deaths represent one of several instances in the Minab casualty list where siblings were killed together in the same strike.
The school was struck at least three times. The second impact killed survivors who had sheltered in the school's prayer room on the instruction of the principal. Human Rights Watch, Bellingcat, BBC Verify, and The New York Times all concluded that the US military was most likely responsible. Missile fragments identified by munitions experts were consistent with a Tomahawk cruise missile.
A total of at least 165 people were killed, the majority of them schoolchildren aged 7 to 12. US Central Command's preliminary internal investigation found that outdated targeting data contributed to the strike, which hit the school adjacent to an IRGC naval facility.
