Johnson, Jackson Davis

Specialist Jackson Davis Johnson was a 20-year-old soldier from Hillsboro, Missouri. He served with the 657th Transportation Company, 419th Transportation Battalion, part of the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military campaign against the Islamic State group.

Johnson died on March 5, 2019, at Camp Arifjan, a major U.S. logistics base in Kuwait. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed in action. The specific details of the incident that led to his death were not publicly disclosed by the military.

Operation Inherent Resolve began in August 2014, following the territorial expansion of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. By early 2019, the group had lost its final territorial stronghold in Syria, and the mission's focus shifted toward advising local forces and conducting targeted counter-terrorism operations. U.S. troops continued to operate from bases like Camp Arifjan, which served as a key hub for logistics and support.

Following his death, Johnson was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. His body was returned to Missouri, where he was buried with military honors. The 103rd Sustainment Command and local officials in Jefferson County issued statements of condolence to his family.

Johnson is memorialized on the website of the U.S. Army's Fallen Warriors and in local tributes in Missouri. His death is recorded among the more than 80 U.S. service members killed in action during Operation Inherent Resolve.
