U.S. Army Sergeant Leandro Antonio Sleeper Jasso, 25, of Leavenworth, Washington, was killed by hostile fire on November 24, 2018, at Forward Operating Base Dwyer in Afghanistan's Garmsir District.

Their Story

Sergeant Leandro Antonio Sleeper Jasso was a 25-year-old soldier from Leavenworth, Washington. He served as an active-duty member of Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, Jasso was fatally wounded by small arms fire on November 24, 2018, during a combat operation in the Garmsir District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The operation was reportedly targeting Taliban militants in the area. He was medically evacuated to the nearby Forward Operating Base Dwyer, where he died of his wounds.

Jasso's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in 2015. The mission involved U.S. and NATO forces conducting counterterrorism operations and training Afghan national security forces against insurgent groups, primarily the Taliban.

The Pentagon confirmed his death the following day. His battalion commander stated Jasso was 'a talented Ranger and an irreplaceable teammate.' His death was reported by several national news outlets, including The New York Times, which listed him among U.S. service members killed in the conflict.

Sergeant Jasso is memorialized on the website of the 75th Ranger Regiment and by the U.S. Army. He was one of 105 American service members killed in Operation Freedom's Sentinel between 2015 and the mission's formal conclusion in 2021.
