Their Story
Private First Class Tyler Ray Iubelt was a 20-year-old soldier from Tamaroa, Illinois. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas. Iubelt deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
On the morning of November 12, 2016, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest near a gymnasium and dining facility on Bagram Airfield, north of Kabul. The attack occurred during a period of high troop traffic. According to U.S. military statements, two U.S. service members were killed and 16 others were wounded. Iubelt was one of the two fatalities.
Iubelt's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S.-led NATO mission that began in January 2015 following the conclusion of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat mission. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan forces and conduct counter-terrorism operations. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Bagram attack.
In the aftermath, Iubelt's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held at Fort Hood, and he was buried with full military honors in his home state of Illinois. The Pentagon officially announced his death on November 13, 2016.
Iubelt was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is memorialized on the 1st Cavalry Division's 'First Team' monument at Fort Hood and on the 'Faces of the Fallen' memorial at the National Museum of the United States Army.
