U.S. Army Sergeant Jonathon Michael Hunter, 23, of Columbus, Indiana, died on August 2, 2017 in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jonathon Michael Hunter was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 504th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was from Columbus, Indiana.
On August 2, 2017, Hunter was killed while on a dismounted patrol in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military statements, his unit came under attack from an enemy improvised explosive device (IED). He was 23 years old.
Hunter's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S.-led NATO mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on January 1, 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan security forces and conduct counterterrorism operations. The war in Afghanistan, which began in 2001, continued through this period.
Following his death, the Department of Defense publicly announced the casualty. His body was returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held in his hometown of Columbus, Indiana, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers.
Sergeant Hunter was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His name is inscribed on the Indiana Fallen Heroes Memorial in Indianapolis.
