Their Story

Staff Sgt. Ryan David Hammond was a 26-year-old airman from Moundsville, West Virginia. He served on active duty with the U.S. Air Force's 39th Airlift Squadron, based at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas, as part of Air Mobility Command.

Hammond died on October 2, 2015, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by small-arms fire while on patrol. He was supporting a train, advise, and assist mission with Afghan forces at the time of his death.

Hammond's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on January 1, 2015. The operation's stated objectives were to train Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism missions against groups including al-Qaeda and the Islamic State's regional affiliate.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. The Air Force posthumously awarded Hammond the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and parents.

Hammond was interred at Arlington National Cemetery. His name is inscribed on the West Virginia Veterans Memorial in Charleston.
