U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Michael James Goble, 33, of Washington Township, New Jersey, was killed in action on December 23, 2019, in Pamir, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Sergeant First Class Michael James Goble was a Special Forces soldier assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. He was a native of Washington Township, New Jersey.
Goble died on December 23, 2019, from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations in Pamir, a village in the Chahar Dara district of Afghanistan's Kunduz province. According to U.S. military statements, the incident occurred during a clearance operation alongside Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.
His death occurred under Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in Afghanistan in January 2015. The mission focused on counterterrorism and training Afghan forces.
The Department of Defense announced Goble's death on December 24, 2019. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Goble was remembered by his unit as a dedicated and professional soldier. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
