U.S. Army Specialist Kyle Eugene Gilbert, 24, of Buford, Georgia, died on September 21, 2015, in Bagram, Afghanistan, while serving with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

Their Story

Kyle Eugene Gilbert was a 24-year-old soldier from Buford, Georgia. He served as an active-duty infantryman with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.

On September 21, 2015, Specialist Gilbert was killed in Bagram, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol.

Gilbert's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism operations. The war in Afghanistan was in its 14th year at the time of his death.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. Gilbert was survived by his parents and siblings, and his body was returned to Georgia for burial.

Gilbert is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division's casualty list and on the Afghanistan War casualty page maintained by the Washington Post. His name is inscribed on the Gwinnett County Fallen Heroes Memorial in Georgia.
