Their Story
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan Robert Farmer, 37, was a Special Forces soldier assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Farmer had deployed multiple times in support of U.S. military operations, including to Iraq and Syria.
On January 16, 2019, Farmer was killed in the Syrian city of Manbij. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained in a suicide bombing. The attack, claimed by the Islamic State group, targeted a restaurant and killed a total of 19 people, including four Americans and at least 10 civilians.
Farmer's death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. The operation began in August 2014. At the time of the attack, Manbij was under the control of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, and U.S. personnel were present for stability and counter-terrorism operations.
The attack prompted immediate statements from U.S. military and political leaders. The Department of Defense confirmed the identities of the four American service members killed. President Donald Trump, who was in office at the time, posted about the attack on social media, stating the U.S. would 'never forget their noble sacrifice.'
Farmer was posthumously promoted from Chief Warrant Officer 2 to Chief Warrant Officer 3. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He is survived by his wife and four children.
