Senior Chief Petty Officer Alonzo Evans was a 44-year-old sailor from Haynesville, Louisiana. He was assigned to Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group 1 (COMPCRON ONE), a unit responsible for maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft operations.
According to the U.S. Navy, Evans died on July 17, 2017, in Al Sayh, Bahrain. The Department of Defense stated he was killed in a non-combat related incident, which was under investigation. No further operational details about the circumstances were publicly released.
His death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. In mid-2017, coalition forces were engaged in intense combat operations to recapture the Iraqi city of Mosul and the Syrian city of Raqqa, the declared capital of the ISIS caliphate.
The Navy announced his death in a press release days after the incident. He was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Evans was survived by his wife and children.
Evans is memorialized on the U.S. Navy Memorial's 'Navy Log' and on the Pentagon's casualty list for Operation Inherent Resolve. His name is also inscribed on the Haynesville War Memorial in his hometown.
