David Lee Espinoza was a 20-year-old Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps from Rio Bravo, Texas. He was killed in a suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021.

Their Story

David Lee Espinoza was born in Laredo, Texas, and grew up in the nearby community of Rio Bravo. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, part of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force, based at Camp Pendleton, California. He was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the initial combat phase of the war.

On August 26, 2021, Espinoza was among the U.S. service members providing security at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport. The airport was the focal point of a massive evacuation of U.S. citizens and Afghan allies following the Taliban's takeover of Kabul. At approximately 5:50 p.m. local time, a suicide bomber from the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) detonated an explosive vest in the dense crowd outside the gate. The blast killed 13 U.S. service members, including Espinoza, and at least 170 Afghan civilians.

Operation Freedom's Sentinel began in January 2015 as a non-combat mission focused on training Afghan forces and conducting counterterrorism strikes. By August 2021, the U.S. was concluding its twenty-year military presence in Afghanistan. The evacuation at HKIA, involving over 120,000 people, was the final major operation, conducted under an agreement with the Taliban and under constant threat from ISIS-K.

Espinoza's death was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Defense. His body was returned to the United States, and he was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott ordered flags to be flown at half-staff, and Espinoza was granted posthumous honorary citizenship of Laredo. His mother described him as a hero who wanted to help people.

Espinoza is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Laredo Energy Arena. His name is inscribed on Panel 32W, Line 4 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Omaha, Nebraska. He was one of the final U.S. service members killed in the Afghanistan War.
