Their Story
Staff Sgt. Carl Philippe Enis was a pararescueman, or PJ, serving with the 308th Rescue Squadron, an Air Force Reserve unit based at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. Pararescuemen are trained for combat search and rescue, medical aid, and personnel recovery missions. Enis, from Tallahassee, was 31 years old at the time of his deployment to Iraq.
Enis died on March 15, 2018, from wounds sustained during a mission in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. According to U.S. Central Command, he was engaged in combat operations against ISIS in Anbar province, west of Baghdad. The incident occurred near Al Asad Air Base, a major Iraqi installation used by U.S. and coalition forces.
Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led military campaign against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. It began in August 2014 after ISIS seized large territories, including the city of Mosul. The mission involved coalition airstrikes and support for local ground forces. By 2018, major urban centers like Mosul and Raqqa had been recaptured, but clearing operations continued in rural areas.
The Department of Defense announced Enis's death on March 16, 2018. He was the second U.S. service member to be killed in combat in Iraq in 2018. His unit, the 308th Rescue Squadron, is part of the 920th Rescue Wing, which specializes in personnel recovery.
Enis was posthumously promoted from Senior Airman to Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. His name is inscribed on the Air Force Memorial and is included in memorials honoring pararescuemen killed in action.
