U.S. Army Sergeant Christopher Wesley Curry, 23, of Terre Haute, Indiana, was killed in action on May 4, 2020, in Erbil, Iraq, while serving in Operation Inherent Resolve.

Their Story

Christopher Wesley Curry was a 23-year-old from Terre Haute, Indiana. He served as a sergeant in Company C, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Sergeant Curry died on May 4, 2020, in Erbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. According to a U.S. Department of Defense release, he was killed by indirect fire from enemy forces while deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led international military campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. It began in August 2014 following the group's territorial expansion. The mission involved advising, assisting, and enabling local partner forces, with U.S. troops largely operating from established bases like those in Erbil.

Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the casualty. His home state senator, Todd Young, issued a statement honoring Curry's service. The 3rd Battalion commander called him a 'phenomenal leader' and a 'true professional' in a unit press release.

Sergeant Curry was posthumously promoted from specialist. He is memorialized on the Operation Inherent Resolve casualty list maintained by the Department of Defense. His death brought the total number of U.S. service members killed in the operation to 107, according to official casualty reports.
