Their Story
Mohammad-Mehdi Chegini was a 10-year-old boy attending the Shajareh Tayyebeh (The Good Tree) primary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, southern Iran. He was killed on 28 February 2026 when US missiles struck the school during the opening hours of the US-Israeli military offensive against Iran.
His name appears on the verified list published by Middle East Eye on 4 March 2026, sourced from Iran's Gymnastics Federation, a handwritten casualty list, and the Tasnim news agency. He was one of at least 165 people killed in the strike, the majority of whom were schoolchildren between the ages of 7 and 12.
Investigations by The New York Times, CBC, NPR, BBC Verify, Bellingcat, and Reuters concluded that the United States military was most likely responsible. Eight independent munitions experts confirmed to The Washington Post that missile debris recovered at the scene was consistent with a US Tomahawk cruise missile. US Central Command later acknowledged, through sources briefed on its preliminary internal findings, that outdated targeting intelligence contributed to the strike on the school, which sat adjacent to ? but was walled off from ? an IRGC naval facility.
A mass funeral for the victims was held in Minab on 3 March 2026. Satellite imagery taken on 4 March confirmed rows of freshly dug individual graves at the Minab Hermud cemetery, approximately 3.5 kilometres from the school.
