Chambers, Christopher John
Chief Petty Officer Christopher John Chambers, 36, of Bowie, Maryland, was a U.S. Navy SEAL killed in action in Afghanistan on January 12, 2024.
Their Story
Christopher John Chambers was a Chief Petty Officer assigned to SEAL Team 3, based in San Diego, California. A native of Bowie, Maryland, he was 36 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan.
On January 12, 2024, Chambers was declared missing at sea during a night-time mission off the coast of Somalia. He and another SEAL, Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Gage Ingram, were boarding a vessel when Ingram fell into the water in rough seas. Chambers jumped in to attempt a rescue. A multi-day search by U.S., Japanese, and Spanish forces across 21,000 square miles followed. The Navy announced on January 22 that the two servicemen were presumed dead, having not been located.
The mission was part of Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. counterterrorism mission in Afghanistan that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in 2015. By 2024, U.S. military operations in the region were focused on maritime interdiction against threats including weapons smuggling by Iranian-backed Houthi forces.
The Navy's U.S. 5th Fleet confirmed the loss. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the incident demonstrated the 'bravery and commitment' of U.S. forces. Chambers was posthumously advanced to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Chambers was remembered by his command as a 'distinguished warrior' and an 'outstanding teammate.' His name is recorded on memorials honoring those lost during Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
