Their Story
Sergeant First Class Allan Eric Brown was a 46-year-old soldier from Takoma Park, Maryland. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas. Brown was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S.-led mission following the conclusion of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On November 12, 2016, while deployed to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan's Parwan Province, SFC Brown was injured in a suicide bombing attack. According to U.S. military statements, an attacker on a motorcycle detonated an explosive vest near a joint U.S.-Afghan patrol. Brown was medically evacuated from the combat theater for treatment of his wounds.
Operation Freedom's Sentinel, which began in January 2015, focused on counter-terrorism and advising Afghan security forces. The conflict remained active, with insurgent attacks on coalition and Afghan forces occurring regularly. The November 2016 attack in Bagram was one of several that targeted the large airbase, a major hub for international troops.
Brown was transported to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, for advanced care. He succumbed to his injuries there on December 6, 2016, nearly a month after the attack. The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release, stating he died of wounds sustained in a hostile incident.
SFC Brown was posthumously promoted from the rank of Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans memorials.
