He served in Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
Brooks died on August 13, 2017, at Qayyarah Airfield West, a key coalition staging base south of Mosul. Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led military campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. It began in August 2014 after ISIS seized large territories, including the city of Mosul. In 2017, coalition and Iraqi forces were engaged in clearing operations following the recapture of Mosul in July of that year. Qayyarah Airfield West, known as Q-West, was a frequent target for ISIS rocket and mortar attacks during this period.
The Pentagon announced Brooks's death the following day. His unit, the 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, mourned his loss in public statements. He was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
Sergeant Brooks was remembered by his commanders as a dedicated and professional soldier. His name is inscribed on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Bragg and is included in the Pentagon's official casualty lists for the conflict.
