First Lieutenant Trevarius Ravon Bowman, 25, of Chesnee, South Carolina, was a U.S. Army National Guard officer killed in action on May 19, 2020, at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan.

Their Story

First Lieutenant Trevarius Ravon Bowman was a signal officer assigned to Company B, 198th Signal Battalion, 261st Signal Brigade, based in Newberry, South Carolina. A 2017 graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served with the South Carolina Army National Guard.

Bowman died on May 19, 2020, from wounds sustained in a small arms fire incident while engaged in a combat operation at Bagram Airfield, according to a Department of Defense statement. He was reportedly part of a security force assisting in clearing operations when the engagement occurred.

His death came during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom. By May 2020, U.S. troop levels had been reduced to approximately 8,600 as part of a drawdown agreement, yet combat operations against insurgent groups like ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) and the Taliban continued.

The South Carolina National Guard and The Citadel publicly confirmed his death, honoring his service. Governor Henry McMaster ordered flags lowered to half-staff in Bowman's memory.

Bowman was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain. He is remembered by his alma mater, where he was a member of the Summerall Guards, an elite silent drill platoon.
