Their Story
Sergeant First Class Robert Rodrigo Boniface was a 34-year-old U.S. Army Special Forces soldier assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. He was a native of San Luis Obispo, California.
According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, Boniface died from wounds sustained during a combat operation in Logar Province, Afghanistan, on March 19, 2017. The operation was reportedly part of a mission to clear an area of Taliban fighters. He was serving as a Special Forces engineer sergeant.
His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan on January 1, 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan security forces and to conduct counter-terrorism operations.
Following his death, the 7th Special Forces Group publicly confirmed the loss. Boniface was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. He was survived by his wife and children.
Boniface was remembered by his unit for his professionalism and dedication. His name is inscribed on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Liberty, North Carolina.
