Bartley, Troy Elwood

Lt. Col. Troy Elwood Bartley was a 57-year-old U.S. Army Reserve officer from Independence, Missouri. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Medical Command (Forward), based out of Fort Gillem, Georgia. The 3rd Medical Command provides command and control for medical units in a theater of operations.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Bartley died on February 11, 2024, at Camp Arifjan, a major U.S. military logistics base in Kuwait. The Pentagon stated his death was the result of a non-combat related incident, which remained under investigation. No further details about the circumstances were immediately released.

Bartley was deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led multinational military campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. The operation began in August 2014 following ISIS's rapid territorial gains. While major combat operations against the ISIS caliphate concluded years prior, a residual U.S. force remains in the region for training, advising, and counter-terrorism missions.

The Department of Defense announced Bartley's death in a press release on February 13, 2024. His death was reported by several U.S. military news outlets, which noted he was one of the older service members to die while deployed under Operation Inherent Resolve.
