Sulthana Book 1 Complete Hausa Novel English Translation

She was a young girl, not more than thirteen years old, curled up beside a wall in the darkness of the night. Her body trembled from the cold.

Before she could understand what was happening, rain began pouring heavily, as if the sky had opened completely.

Quickly, she moved back into the entrance area of the house and found another corner to fold herself into. Even though water was leaking there too, she sat quietly, wiping away her tears.

The rain continued pouring heavily over the town.

With difficulty, she slid down to the ground and lay there, still shivering from the cold. Eventually, sleep overtook her.

The Call to Prayer

She heard the calls for Subhi prayer.

Slowly, she adjusted her sleeping position because that was the first moment she had truly begun to sleep well.

She had not finished adjusting herself when she heard footsteps.

No one needed to tell her. She knew it was Baffa.

Quickly, she sat up, scratching her body while looking at Baffa, who stood there shining a torchlight on her.

He shouted, “You hear the call to prayer, yet you will not wake up? What kind of creature are you? Will you stand up, or should I hit you?”

She quickly stood and entered the house, still scratching her body.

Mama Helps Sulthana

She saw Mama by the well, drawing water.

She quickly went closer and held the bucket.

“Mama, give it to me. Let me draw the water for you.”

Mama smiled slightly.

“No, Sulthana. Leave it. Bring the kettle so I can pour water for you to perform ablution.”

Without arguing, Sulthana brought the kettle and came back to the well.

At that moment, Hafsatu came out from the room where she had slept, scratching her head.

When she raised her head and saw Mama pouring water into the kettle for Sulthana, she said harshly, “Wonderful, Sulthana. So because of your laziness, Mama has become your servant? She is even drawing water and pouring it for you into the kettle?”

Immediately, Sulthana’s body began to tremble because she knew Hafsatu’s character very well. If Hafsatu caught her, she could treat her badly.

Mama said, “Haba, Hafsatu. What is wrong if I pour water for her? She came to take it from me, but I stopped her.”

Hafsatu quickly came closer.

“Haba, Mama. Why are you saying that? Baffa told her all the work she must be doing in this house, and drawing water is part of it. But because of stubbornness, she refused, and now you are the one drawing it.”

Mama frowned and looked at Hafsatu.

“I do not like nonsense. Go and perform ablution.”

Hafsatu pushed out her lips in annoyance, turned, and looked at Sulthana, who was standing with her head lowered. She hissed and left the place.

Prayer in Mama’s Room

Mama turned back to Sulthana.

“Here is the water. Go quickly and perform ablution before your Baffa returns.”

Sulthana answered and entered the bathroom. She washed, performed ablution, and came out.

By then, Mama had also finished her ablution.

Mama said, “Sulthana, enter my room and pray before your Baffa returns. Hurry up.”

Quickly, Sulthana changed her clothes into an old long ankara gown. She wore Mama’s hijab and began praying.

While she was still praying, she heard Baffa’s greeting.

Her insides trembled.

With difficulty, she completed the prayer. She did not even wait to make dua before coming out of the room.

She saw him in the goat shed, giving feed to his animals.

When he raised his head, he saw her coming out of his room, moving timidly with her head lowered.

“Sulthana!” he called.

“Which room did I just see you coming out from?”

She began stammering.

Then Mama came out wearing her hijab, showing that she had finished praying.

“I told her to come and pray there,” Mama said.

Baffa’s Anger

Baffa gave Mama a harsh look.

“Saratu, how many times have I told you to stay away from this girl’s affairs? But you refused.”

Mama stared at him in shock.

“Haba, Mallam. You speak as if you are not the one who gave birth to her. Do you not fear responsibility? This girl is a trust in your hands. Why are you…”

He cut her off sharply.

“Enough. Keep quiet.”

Then he turned his gaze toward Sulthana, who still stood there with her head lowered. It was clear she was crying.

He said, “And you, are you standing there looking at me? Will you not go and do the work you are supposed to do?”

Quickly, Sulthana left the place and headed toward their kitchen.

She began bringing out dirty plates and taking them to the side of the well. From time to time, she wiped the tears rolling down her face.
