Abdulrahim rises, folds his arms across his chest and quietly walks toward the house.
After the marriage ceremony, Bappa Salihu goes directly to Hajiya’s section.
He brings her kola nuts and sweets and officially informs her that Abdulrahim and Feeryal have been married. He explains that the marriage was conducted immediately after the dawn prayer because he personally instructed that there should be no further delay.
Hajiya is horrified.
She drops from her chair and demands to know how anyone could arrange a marriage between Abdulrahim and a girl she believes is partly human and partly jinn.
To her, Feeryal’s mysterious identity makes the marriage unacceptable.
She strongly rejects the union and declares that just as the marriage was arranged, it must also be dissolved.
She insists that Abdulrahim, whom she describes as someone closely connected to Western ways, cannot possibly live peacefully with a girl like Feeryal.
But Bappa Salihu refuses to retreat.
He tells her clearly that although she may not approve, he and his brothers Jibir and Ali have already accepted the marriage.
The decision has been made concerning their son Abubakar and their grandson Abdulrahim, and Hajiya does not possess greater authority over them than the rest of the family elders.
