The Romantic Evening: Shadow and My Noor
Around 5:30 PM on a peaceful afternoon, two young lovers sit on white plastic chairs, lost in a joyful and intimate conversation. Their bright, radiant smiles make their deep mutual affection obvious to anyone watching.
Ahanaf (famously known as Shadow) looks warmly at his bride-to-be, Noriya (My Noor), asking her about her plans for the upcoming wedding events. Feeling a sudden wave of shyness, Noor covers her face with her hands and lowers her head.
Shadow playfully frowns, expressing mock frustration over her bashfulness whenever the subject of their marriage comes up. He reminds her that with only a few days remaining until their wedding, they need to finalize their arrangements together. Noor gently apologizes, explaining that as the wedding day draws near, her shyness towards him has naturally grown, making everything feel different than before.
Deeply touched by her response, Shadow teasingly questions whether she loves him as much as he loves her. Noor immediately looks up, promising that her love for him is even deeper than he realizes and that time will soon prove it.
Satisfied, Shadow stands up to leave for an appointment, admitting that he could not depart without seeing his “Light” (Haskena) first. Before taking his leave, Shadow shares a serious, heartfelt reminder:
“There is no need for thanks between us, My Noor. My only prayer is that once we are married, you must never become my Duhun Inuwa (Dark Shadow). Keep my trust, Noor. I am a man who values absolute truth and honesty above everything. I despise secrets and hidden things. Tell me the truth always, even if it hurts, because I will always prefer an uncomfortable truth over a lie. Keep this in mind, and we will never have a problem.”
Noor takes a deep breath, reassuring him that she has always known his principles and will never keep secrets from him. Reassured, Shadow leaves on his motorcycle while Noor watches him go with a happy smile before stepping inside her home.
Wedding Preparations and the Arrival of NYSC Friends
Two weeks pass rapidly as pre-wedding events are successfully hosted. The grand wedding day arrives, leaving only the official wedding solemnization (Daurin Aure) and the evening dinner scheduled for the following day. Noor looks stunning, radiating beauty and wrapped in an exquisite fragrance.
Meanwhile, Shadow is overwhelmed with hosting out-of-town guests who traveled early to attend the ceremony. Among them are his former NYSC corp member friends from Gombe—Kamal and Haidar—who promised to travel down to Sokoto for Shadow’s big day.
Gathered together in a joyful reunion, Kamal playfully teases Shadow, claiming that if Shadow hadn’t secured Noor, he might have ended up in an asylum because no one else invests so much time and devotion into love. Kamal cautions that women can be unpredictable and adept at breaking hearts.
Shadow laughs off the warning, expressing total confidence in Noor’s character, her family’s upbringing, and the authenticity of her love. He refuses to compare her to typical modern girls.
Haidar joins in, teasing Kamal about his bitter breakup with his ex-girlfriend, Sadey Beb. Kamal grows irritated, declaring that Sadey Beb is in his past and that her deceit was her own loss. Kamal jokingly asks if Sokoto girls offer genuine love, hoping he might find a local bride himself, prompting warm laughter from the group.
The friends continue chatting happily as they arrive at Shadow’s family home located in the Minannata neighborhood of Sokoto.
The Wedding Day Betrayal: December 15, 2021
On December 15, 2021, a large crowd gathers to witness the wedding solemnization of Ahanaf Muhammad Imran (Shadow) and Noriya Mukhtar Salah (Noor). Relatives, friends, and well-wishers from both sides fill the venue as the officiants prepare to finalize the marriage contract.
As Shadow sits with his teasing friends, the voice of the local announcer echoes across the crowd:
“Alhamdulillah! The marriage contract of NORIYA MUKHTAR SALAH and her groom AL-QASEEM MUHAMMAD IMRAN has been solemnized with a dowry of 100,000 Naira paid in full!”
Hearing this, Shadow leaps to his feet in disbelief, staggering as he confronts his father (Abba):
“Abba, you made a mistake! My name is Ahanaf Muhammad Imran, not Al-Qaseem Muhammad Imran! Did you just solemnize the marriage with Al-Qaseem instead of me? Please tell them that is my younger brother’s name! Abba, what is happening? Please correct the name!”
Overwhelmed with confusion and panic, eyes filling with tears, Shadow begs for an explanation. His father grabs his hand, telling him to come home so he can explain everything privately. But Shadow pulls his hand away, demanding immediate correction before the public realizes what has transpired:
“Abba, Noor married to Al-Qaseem? What did I do to deserve such a painful punishment? If I offended you, punish me in any way, but do not take Noor away from me! I love her and cannot live without her! Abba, please do not plunge your son’s life into DUHUN INUWA (Dark Shadow)! Unless… are you not my real father?!”
Before Shadow can finish his sentence, his father delivers a sharp, stinging slap directly across his face (tasssssssssss).
Shadow stares at his father in complete shock. Abba, who normally never allowed anyone to scold or upset Ahanaf because he bore the name of Abba’s own father, had just slapped him in public.
Breathing heavily in anger, Abba firmly declares:
“This is no dream, Ahanaf. This is reality. I, your father Muhammad Imran, have solemnized the marriage of Noriya Mukhtar Salah to Al-Qaseem Muhammad Imran!”
Before Abba can even finish his sentence, Shadow collapses directly onto the ground, completely unconscious and showing no signs of breath.
