I cried for so long until I became exhausted. Eventually, I wiped my tears myself. I wanted to perform ablution and pray, but I didn’t even know where to start. I needed to use the bathroom first to clean myself before praying.
As I stepped outside, I found the compound filled with people—men and women, all busy with their own activities. None of them looked decent or respectable. Most of the women wore wrappers tied across their chests, while the men wore short trousers and singlets.
I stood at the doorway for more than five minutes, unable to move forward or backward, just watching everyone.
“Madam, are you okay? You’ve been standing there staring at us. Is everything alright?”
The voice came harshly, almost as if ready to attack me. I quickly turned to see who spoke. It was a young girl, standing with her hands on her waist, staring at me just as I was staring at her.
Before I could say anything, she slapped me hard across the face. I quickly held my cheek—the slap was painful enough to bring tears to my eyes.
“Who do you think you are? I’m talking to you and you’re ignoring me? Today you must tell me who gave you the audacity to disrespect me like this!”
“What did I do to you?” I asked, still holding my cheek.
That question seemed to anger her even more. She grabbed my hijab tightly, choking me as I began to cough. Despite the crowd, no one came to help me. Everyone acted like nothing was happening.
“What is going on here, Baraka? Do you want to kill her? Leave her!”
An older woman, Hajiya Babba, came out and pulled Baraka away from me.
She scolded her harshly and ordered her to pack her belongings and leave the house immediately.
Baraka fell to her knees, begging and crying, but Hajiya refused.
Then she turned to me.
“What do you want?”
“I want to use the bathroom… and perform ablution,” I replied quietly.
She pointed at me and said, “I’m only helping you because you’re new here and Aminu brought you. Everything in this house is for sale. You must pay for anything you use—even water.”
She gave me a bucket, a kettle, and three sachets of water.
I later went to ask some women where the bathroom was, but instead of answering, they laughed at me mockingly.
Finally, a girl wearing a white hijab approached me kindly.
“Come, I’ll show you,” she said.
She led me to the bathroom and assured me she would stand guard so no one would intrude.
Shocked, I asked, “Someone could come in on me?”
She replied, “That’s the kind of people here. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.”
Afterward, I prayed Maghrib and Isha. Hunger soon overwhelmed me. When I turned to get the food Aminu brought, it was gone. Even my remaining water had disappeared.
I broke down in tears, clutching my stomach in hunger. The pain became unbearable, and I couldn’t sleep all night.
By morning, I was extremely weak and sick. A girl—the same one who helped me—came and gave me bread and tea.
I ate quickly, but soon after, I vomited violently.
She helped me clean up and supported me until I finished my Fajr prayer.
“What’s your name?” I asked her.
“La’aniyatu,” she replied.
I was shocked by the name.
Then she revealed something even more shocking—Hajiya Babba was her mother.
